So that’s whats been making me sick.

For the past several years I have had a very sensitive stomach. It didn’t seem to matter what I ate half an hour to an hour later I felt miserable.

Now I have been eating clean (mostly) for the last 2 years and for the most part I have not had any stomach issues, but occasionally I still get sick. I had not been able to figure out what was going on. At this point I was just blaming it on my Mom for passing down defective genetics. It wasn’t happening all the time now so I guess I can live with it.

Well about 2 weeks ago I finally figured out what has been causing my misery. My husband and I went to lunch at a little deli, it was cold and rainy out so I decided to have a little cheat – baked potato soup. It looked so good and creamy and loaded with cheese on top, just one small bowl, no bread and a water to drink. Half an hour later I was doubled over in the store and praying I would just die. I just figured the soup was bad…or something like that. The next morning I felt fine, I figured what ever it was had run it’s course. So I was back to clean eating. Several days later I stopped at Starbucks for a skinny cinnamon dolce latte, you guessed it, 30 mins after drinking my latte my stomach was all bloated and I was not feeling great. Then I got to thinking…that whey protein powder, makes my stomach all bloated as well. *Light goes on* All these things have something in common, they are dairy based.

DAIRY, all these years, so many people with the same issue and it never crossed my mind. I am not a big dairy eater any way, who would think the little bit I was consuming would have such a huge impact on my life. Problem solved and in the grand scheme of life an easy fix, but when you can’t have something is when you want it more, even if it was not something you had ever wanted or craved before.

So I decided I really needed to test my theory.

Over Thanksgiving I bought a huge wheel of Brie, because this is truly one of my weakness. I love baked brie with raspberries jam and bagel chips. I bake this huge wheel of cheese and immediately dove into it as it came out of the oven. I tried to control myself but the creamy buttery taste mixed with the sweet raspberries was more than I could handle.  I must say I did not do a very good job.  I ate a large serving of brie. I sat at the table hoping guilt was the only thing that was going to overcome me…but no about half an hour later I was doubled over laying on the sofa cursing myself for eating the dairy. So now without a shadow of a doubt I know what has been making me sick, the new challenge comes to switch away from dairy products.

I am slowly trying new things such as Almond and Soy milk. Good thing I only use these in my coffee (latte).  I guess it will just make me more contiguous of the food choices I make from now on.

oh bummer!! But glad you figured it out. Let me know how you like almond milk. I have yet to try it, but do enjoy soy milk on occasion.
